Cauliflower wings, a dish that looks and tastes exactly like the Buffalo wild wings or hot Chicken wings. These cauliflower wings even have crispy skin like with chicken and can make an amazing appetizer for your parties or just something to munch on, while you catch up on some television with your family.

Cauliflower wings, Vegan Chicken Wings

I always knew that the world is made up of two kinds of people. Those who like books and those who like the movies that were made based on the books. Those, who play board games over the weekend and those, who go clubbing. And so on and so forth. Not confining myself to the category I belong to, I am pretty open to meeting and even liking people of the other category. What took me by surprise was the fact that there is a category of people who consider vegetarian food tastless and non-nutritious. Hmmm…

Vegetarian chicken wings

Coming from a predominantly vegetarian country, I found the idea of vegetarian food being tasteless quite shocking! Don’t get me wrong. There are regions of India where people cannot go a day without eating their meat, regions where fish is considered vegetarian and regions where chicken is a part of every meal. However, none of them, consider vegetarian food tasteless and nutrition less.

I know right! There is nothing that opens up your mind more than travelling across food barriers. For me, as a food blogger, moving to a predominantly meat-eating country has opened up a host of avenues. Not only am I able to work with the flavors of vegetarian food that are known to work well, I also get to swap flavor profiles. Using sauces and seasoning that are used for meat, to create vegetarian dishes gives me a high!

vegan chicken recipes

Like these cauliflower wings. I loved serving them to my husband and his friends and smiling at their surprise that these Buffalo wings were actually vegetarian. They were so taken by the fact that they could not tell cauliflower wings apart from chicken wings and that the vegan wings even had a crispy skin layer to them! Pssst.. The crispy skin over the cauliflower wings? Well- seasoned, crispy fried batter 🙂

P.S: If you want to try more such fusion recipes, here are my recommendations-

Cauliflower Wings

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 15 minutes

Total Time: 25 minutes

Serves: Makes about 12 wings

  • 2 medium sized cauliflower heads
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup rice flour
  • 2 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp pepper
  • Salt to season
  • About 1 cup water (as required to make a batter)
  • Buffalo sauce (as per desired spice level)
  • Oil for frying.

  1. Remove the excess leaves off the cauliflower heads. Make sure that you leave ample stem intact.
  2. Cut them in the center vertically as shown in the picture. Take one half and cut another vertical slice off the flower.
  3. Each half will probably give 2 vertical slices before giving way and breaking down into florets. One of these slices (the first one) can be cut into two wings. That will give you 6 cauliflower wings from each head.
  4. Repeat with the other cauliflower. Store the broken florets for other recipes like this mimic orange chicken (orange cauliflower) or baked garlic-y cauliflower like this.
  5. Meanwhile heat oil in a deep wok or dutch oven.
  6. Mix the two flours (all purpose flour and rice flour), salt, pepper and garlic powder.
  7. Add water in small quantities while mixing it into a thick batter. Keep the batter thick enough to quote the cauliflower well.
  8. Check if the temperature of the oil is right by gently lowering drop of the batter into it. The batter rising to the top almost immediately (within 15 seconds), indicates that the oil is hot enough for frying.
  9. Dip the cauliflower wing into the batter, coat well on both sides and lower it into the hot oil. Fry about 2-3 wings at once.
  10. Fry the wings for about 2-3 minutes or until golden on both sides. Do not hurry into taking it out of the oil. Since the batter coating is thick, it takes time to cook through and crisp up.
  11. Drain the crispy wings onto paper towels and finish frying the rest of the wings too.
  12. Slather them with buffalo sauce and serve immediately.
  13. Serve some carrot sticks and celery sticks with some dip to go with and enjoy your vegan buffalo wild wings!

My Take:

If you want to serve the wings for a later time, do not add the sauce. Keep the fried wings warm in the oven to retain their crispiness. Or give them a re-fry in the wok before serving.

You can also try any other sauce honey-lime or so to create vegan wings of your choice.
