I wanted to bake something fun this weekend and Drunken Brownies rose to the occasion. They were moist, fudgy, chocolate-y, every so lightly gooey and the best of all, boozy! What fun!

Drunken Brownies

I love huge stores where you can find everything. I don’t mean Costco or Walmart. I mean stores like Home depot – Man! Can I find everything I need to build a house there?! I like going there even if I have nothing to buy 😀 And Michaels, they’ve got stuff for any possible art/craft project you want to take up. While I like these stores, my husband does too… Whaaaat?! Yes, he does. The only difference, he likes Total Wines! Name any alcoholic drink and they’ve got it. He wouldn’t mind going there even if there was nothing to buy. It’s another thing that he will anyway walk out of the store, with a cart full of bottles clanging away to glory!

Drunken Brownies

This time around, I decided to stock up on some alcohol that I might need for cooking (Considering how much I had to fight with him when I made this Beer Battered Asparagus). I picked up some travel size alcohol bottles. So, now,

  1. I have a variety of them at my disposal
  2. I don’t have to store the rest of the bottle (after using the meagre quantities that most recipes call for)
  3. I don’t have to wrench it out of my husband’s hands!

Boozy Brownies

This bottle, the chocolate-y batter for the Drunken Brownies and the egg shells helped me capture a good photograph (I think so. Please chime in and let me know).

Before I forget, the recipe is super simple. It is easy to make, with only 5 min of hands-on work and just 1 bowl gets dirty. Line your pan with paper and all you have to do is clean the mixing bowl. Fewer dishes to wash, chocolate and alcohol, life ain’t getting better than this!

Here’s the recipe for

Drunken Brownies

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 25 minutes

Total Time: 30 minutes

  • 3 Oz (85 g or ½ cup) dark chocolate – I used 60% Ghirardelli bittersweet chocolate
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter + extra for greasing pan
  • 50 ml (1/4 cup) vodka
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  1. Melt butter and chocolate over a double boiler or in a microwave (use a microwave safe bowl. Melt for 25 seconds. Whisk. Repeat process until everything has melted and you have a smooth chocolate-butter mixture).
  2. Add sugar and whisk well.
  3. Add the vodka, mix and check if the mixture has cooled down.
  4. Add the two eggs to the cooled down mixture (if the mixture is warm, the eggs could get partially cooked).
  5. Whisk the eggs into the mixture. Add the flour in two batches and again, mix well to make a uniform batter.
  6. Transfer the batter to a greased pan and bake at 350°F (180°C). Bake for about 25 min or until a fork inserted comes out ALMOST clean. We want the centre to be a tad moist and gooey unlike a cake.
  7. Cool on a wired rack for about 15 min.
  8. Cut into bars of desired size and serve.

My Take:

Try some raisins soaked in rum and add in along with the rum for a rum and raisin brownie.

Try white chocolate for some Drunk Blondies.

  1. Chocolate + Vodka? I don’t think it gets much better than that. What a decadent and potent combination!

  2. You added vodka to the brownies, I need it now. Delicious. Badly I am in need of booze.

  3. Very professionally made 🙂

  4. Looks soft and fabulous 🙂

  6. Hey Prashanthi, this is Shuchita’s sister. I actually made this for my husband’s birthday yesterday. Came out really well! Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work. I don’t get as much time for cooking as I’d like but feel compelled to try inspiring stuff like this from time to time 🙂 Cheers!

    • Hey Shubha!
Thank you for trying the recipe and leaving behind your thoughts 🙂 I am glad I could be a part of your day 🙂

  8. What size pan do you use? 8×8 square, or 9×13 rectangle?

  10. Do you get drunk off these brownies? Doesn’t the alcohol burn out?

    • Getting drunk is subjective but no, the alcohol does not burn out completely. About 40% of the alcohol remains after baking for 25 minutes. And of course, 100% flavor too 🙂

  11. I think I won this recipe. I made it with Patron XO Cafe Dark and chunks of powered caramel on top melting in the oven right now. Thank you for the inspiration!

  13. This recipe looks amazing, but do you know if I could make this with a brownie mix? I’m really bad at baking and I can usually do it well with box mix.

  14. I’m going to be making these for an outdoor movie screening picnic with a bunch of friends! I’m going to use a bite size silicone pan and Bailey’s instead of the vodka! Soooooo excited! Thank you for sharing this recipe!
