SALSA VERDE | MEXICAN GREEN CHILI DIP

Every time I walk into a super market and find red round juicy tomatoes with their greens intact, I want to pick up the whole lot! I am a big fan of tomatoes. I love the variety in which Mother Nature makes them, red, green, round, oval. They can spruce up any dish! You just got to understand that each variety has its own strong suit!  Some are sour, some are sweet, and some are just bland colourful fruits.

I came across a beautifully photographed picture of green chili sauce in a food magazine, that’s when tomatillos caught my eye. This was my brain’s reaction to it “new variety of tomatoes. OOOOOOOOOO….” It sounded like I had just won some contest.

Anyhow, here is the recipe for a Mexican dip made out of tomatillos and peppers,

Salsa Verde

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 5 minutes

Total Time: 10 minutes

Serves: 2-4

SALSA VERDE | MEXICAN GREEN CHILI DIP

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fire roasted and de-skinned Mexican green peppers
  • 1 1/2 cup chopped tomatillos
  • 3-4 cloves of garlic
  • 1 tbsp Mexican oregano
  • 2 jalapeno peppers slit
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1 cup chopped cilantro stems
  • 2 tbsp lime juice
  • Salt to taste
  • Cooking oil spray

Directions

  1. Add chopped onions, garlic, slit jalapeno peppers and sauté for 2 minutes. Throw the cilantro stems into the pan and cook for another 2 min.
  2. Turn the heat off and let it cool.
  3. Blend the sautéed mixture, fire roasted green chili, tomatillos and salt together with very little water(if required) to a coarse paste.
  4. Serve with some nachos or baked tortilla chips!
  5. It can also be used to make green chili enchiladas or tacos.

My Take:

Salsa Verde has to be made as per your taste. None of the above measurements have to be adhered to strictly.

Add and subtract spice and sourness the way you like your salsa
