VEGAN CORN DOGS | BABY CORN FRITTERS
These Vegan Corn Dogs have no dogs (sausages) in them, they have no imitation soy meat in them and they are not only Vegan (Duh! The name says so :P), they are also gluten free. What does it mean? Do they have air in them?!! :/
You know how kids always want the toy that the other kid or the sibling has? In my opinion, most adults are that way too. They always think that the other person has the best of world’s or the grass is greener on the other side. Take me for example. I always find the food on my husband’s plate more appetizing. Even if the meal is home cooked! I cook it, I served it onto his plate but half way through our meal, I peep into his plate and I secretly wish I had taken that plate instead! 😀
Scene 2: A fancy restaurant. I know its bad manners to look at what others are eating but my eyes invariably wander. Looking at what the waiter is carrying, what my neighbors are eating, what the kiddie meal includes, anything but looking at my plate. I have always been very inquisitive (I know. The curious cat died!); only now, I have the excuse of blogging. I am trying to look, understand plating techniques blah blah blah 😀
My point of telling you guys this whole philosophy was this: Like bhel puri, Vada pav (recipe), Misal pav (recipe) and cotton candy mark the fairs/melas in India, food on a stick and funnel cakes are characterstic of county fairs in the US. The only problem is that, all the food on a stick is meat!! L Being a lover of fairs, junk food and food in my neighbor’s hand, having a good time at these fairs become very tough for me. I mostly spend my time looking at people’s hands and imagine that red juicy thing on their stick is a vegetarian dish and come close to drooling! Even when I am watching the July 4th fireworks!
So, this July 4th, I decided to make my own vegetarian food on a stick and make it look exactly like it does at the county fair! So, I coated baby corn with seasoned mashed potato, dunked them into corn meal & flour batter and Voila! My Vegan corn dogs, my juicy food on a stick 🙂

Vegan Corn Dogs
VEGAN CORN DOGS| BATTERED BABY CORN FRITTERS
For the “Dog”
- 1 can of baby corn (about 400g)
- 2 cups boiled and mashed potato (keep it as dry as possible)
- Salt to season the potatoes
- 1 tsp cayenne pepper
For the Batter
- 1 cup chickpea flour (all purpose flour is used traditionally)
- 1/3 cup corn meal (can be increased upto 1/2 cup)
- 3/4 cup water – more or less (we are aiming at a thick pancake like batter)
- Salt to season
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1tsp crushed black pepper
For the corn dogs
- Oil for frying
- Drain the baby corn from the can and lay them on paper towels. If you are using fresh baby corn (use only tender ones), add them into boiling water for about 3-4 min. drain and run some cold water onto them. Then drain them onto paper towels.
- Season the mashed potatoes with spices of your choice. I have used just salt and cayenne pepper keeping the spice levels low (I presume sausages are not spicy!).
- Oil your hands lightly. Take a portion of the mashed potatoes. Flatten it, place the baby corn inside.
- Use your hands to cover the corn. Now, roll it between your hands to even out the potato covering. While doing so, excess potato coating extends beyond the baby corn. Pinch the excess off. You will end up with a sausage-like covered baby corn.
- Heat oil in a pan for frying.
- Mix all the ingredients meant for the batter except the water. Start adding water in small quantities and mixing the batter simultaneously until you achieve a thick but flowing pancake-like batter.
- Check the temperature of the oil by dropping a drop of the batter into the oil. If it sinks and then starts floating immediately, you are good to go.
- Dip the “dogs” into the batter carefully to coat them evenly. Shake off the excess batter gently. Slowly lower it into the oil. (Hot oil can be dangerous. Be careful)
- Once it starts to turn golden, gently flip them so that they are fried evenly from all directions.
- Once done, remove them using a slotted spoon and place them in a bowl lined with paper towels.
- Serve with a side of mustard sauce and tomato ketchup.
Traditionally, all purpose flour/ maida is used in place of chickpea flour.
If you would like an Indian take on the potato covering, add turmeric and cumin to season the potatoes.
If you do not have corn meal on hand, may be you could try adding some soji/rawa/semolina into the batter to attain that crunchy texture? This is just a suggestion and you might have to try it out. I have not used it.
